Direct expansion

DX cooling systems use a refrigerant gas to chill the air and are most effective in small scale server rooms.

Reasons to choose a direct expansion cooling system:

• Comparatively cheap to install
• Minimal equipment and pipe work is compact
• Heat transfer is very effective
• Liquid is eliminated from the data centre as the refrigerant boils at -40C

However, DX cooling tends to have higher running costs than chilled water systems and is harder to scale up or down.

Additionally, as the chillers remove moisture from the air in your server room, we recommend installing a humidifier at the same time as your cooling system.
