RMD launches Smart PUE meter
RMD has reaffirmed its commitment to cutting electricity bills and reducing energy wastage in data centres with the launch of a new Smart PUE monitoring system.
The company, which provides power and cooling solutions across the UK and Europe, is pleased to announce that it will now supply, install and maintain InfraStruXure Central, the PUE monitoring system from APC by Schneider.
PUE, or power usage effectiveness, refers to the ratio of the total electricity supplied to a data centre against the power consumption of IT equipment. It is the metric recommended by the European Union in the Code of Conduct for Data Centre Efficiency. A PUE value of 2.0 or above indicates unnecessary wastage while an energy efficient data centre should aim to achieve a measurement of below 1.2.
Since 90% of data centres do not monitor PUE, opportunities to eliminate wastage and slash energy bills are frequently overlooked. InfraStruXure Central puts data centre managers back in control of energy usage by highlighting efficiency losses wherever they occur, allowing action to be taken.
John Smykala, RMD's Managing Director comments: "CO2 emissions reduction is becoming compulsory for data centres and measurement is key. In order to affect change, it is essential that companies have the infrastructure to assess the carbon footprint of their data centres."
"The easiest way to cut emissions without compromising services is to find and eliminate wastage. We recommend the InfraStruXure Central application because it provides all the data necessary for managers to make informed decisions that improve efficiency and reduce the impact of data centres on our environment."
InfraStruXure Central measurements of energy usage are based on metered data, gathered over a specified period of time. If no metered data is available, estimated power draw will be calculated based on the power usage of individual IT assets. Cost analysis of energy use can then be provided on a kW/h basis.
Since InfraStruXure Central provides rack level analysis, the cost of energy consumption for specified equipment can be calculated. There is also an option of calculating energy usage based on local costs and currency. This is good news for data centre managers as it can be used to aid in charge back to clients and improve budgeting.
As a leading independent specialist in integrated power and cooling solutions, RMD also offers free power and cooling audits to companies seeking to save energy and go green. With over two decades in the industry, RMD's engineers guarantee to meet the unique needs of every customer.
